Who Should Get the Bodega BD60 Portable Refrigerator?
Over the years, we’ve reviewed quite a few portable refrigerators, but none quite like the Bodega BD60. Most previous models resembled oversized coolers with wheels, but this 12-volt fridge takes a completely different approach.
The Bodega BD60 is a sizable 12-volt fridge that looks more like a metal chest freezer than a typical portable refrigerator. While it’s still portable and light enough to carry when empty, its main purpose isn’t frequent movement.
This is the kind of 12-volt fridge you leave in the back of a car, RV, garage, or basement. It’s better insulated than traditional car fridges and offers a generous amount of storage space.
I recommend this versatile fridge/freezer for anyone planning to keep it in a fixed location most of the time. It’s ideal for installation in a van, RV storage compartment, or the back of a vehicle.
That said, you can still move it when it’s not in use, which makes it a great option for emergency home use. It’s highly efficient and can hold significantly more food than a standard car fridge.
With that introduction, let’s dive into our full review of the Bodega BD60 portable fridge/freezer.

First Impressions
Summary
- Efficient
- Quiet
- Sturdy
When my new Bodega BD60 12-volt fridge arrived at my door, I wasn’t quite prepared for the massive box waiting for me. Compared to the 45-quart fridges I typically test, this one felt like a serious upgrade in size.
Thankfully, the box was much larger than the fridge itself. While the fridge is definitely sizable, it’s still manageable and not overly bulky.
My first impressions have been overwhelmingly positive. I’ve had it set up in my bedroom, and so far, it’s proven to be quiet enough not to disrupt my sleep, impressively efficient, and solidly constructed. The quality of the build really stands out.
What’s more, there’s absolutely no setup involved. You can start using this portable fridge straight out of the box with either 12-volt DC or AC power.

Bodega BD60 Portable Fridge Testing
When reviewing portable fridges, the primary factor we test is power usage. Since these fridges are mostly used for camping and emergencies, energy efficiency is crucial.
Most of us rely on portable power stations paired with solar panels to keep fridges like these running. That’s why it’s important to understand how much power a 12-volt fridge will consume over a 24-hour period, as well as its maximum power draw.
The Bodega BD60 is rated for a maximum power draw of 80 watts, meaning it can run on any standard 12-volt outlet, like the ones found in most cars. During my tests, the actual maximum power draw reached 53.5 watts (0.665 amps), which is well below the rated max. Even a small 100-watt power station could keep the Bodega fridge running for several hours.
Testing Methodology
I test all portable fridges while they’re empty, as this tends to represent the maximum power usage over a 24-hour period. Interestingly, I’ve found that fridges consume significantly less power when filled with food, as the stored contents help maintain internal temperatures.
However, several factors can influence power usage, including:
- Ambient temperature – Higher temperatures require the compressor to work harder.
- Lid usage – Frequently opening the lid increases energy demand.
- Warm contents – Adding warm food temporarily spikes energy consumption.
For practical tips on how to minimize power usage for portable refrigerators, check out the FAQ section at the end of this review.
24 Hour Power Usage
Inner Temperature | Ambient Temperature | Power Type | Watt Hours Used in 24 Hours | Amp Hours Used in 24 Hours |
0°F (-18°C) | 70°F (21°C) | 12 volt | 356 Wh | 29.67 Ah |
37°F (3°C) | 70°F (21°C) | 12 volt | 170 Wh | 14.17 Ah |
The Bodega BD60 uses very little power when compared to other styles of portable fridges, even smaller ones.
To compare, we tested and reviewed a 50 liter capacity, dual zone Bodega car fridge. I set one compartment to freezer and the other to fridge. It used 479Wh in similar conditions to the test we did on the BD60.
Even though it was smaller and had two compartments instead of one, the Bodega BD60 still used way less power.
Temperature Capabilities
The Bodega BD60 offers an impressive temperature range of -4℉ (-20℃) to 68℉ (20℃). During my testing, I monitored the internal temperature using a fridge thermometer.
At times, the internal temperature fluctuated a few degrees above or below the set temperature, but for the most part, it stayed consistent. This shows that the fridge is capable of performing as advertised, reliably keeping your fridge or freezer items at safe temperatures.
Bluetooth/App Controls
I’ve used the CARFRIDGEFREEZER app to control the Bodega BD60 and other portable fridges, and I’m a fan of its simplicity and responsiveness.
The app connects quickly and allows full control over features like battery protection levels, Eco mode, and temperature adjustments.
I find it particularly useful for monitoring the refrigerator’s performance, especially when it’s running in an RV or car. It gives me peace of mind knowing I can check and adjust the fridge settings remotely.
Noise Levels
If you’re planning to use a portable fridge in a van or small RV, noise levels are an important consideration since you’ll likely be sleeping near it.
As a light sleeper, I’m happy to report that the Bodega BD60’s noise levels didn’t bother me at all, even during the more demanding freezer test.
The only minor annoyance was the brightness of the control panel light. I placed a book in front of it, and the issue was resolved.
Bodega BD60 12V Fridge Review
If portability is your main priority, a 12-volt refrigerator with wheels might be a better choice. However, if you’re looking for a large, energy-efficient fridge, the Bodega BD60 is an excellent option.
There’s also a larger version with two compartments, the Bodega BD80 (click to view).
The BD80 offers 20 liters more storage than the BD60 and features two compartments with separate lids. This means you can use it as both a fridge and a freezer simultaneously, adding extra flexibility for your needs.
The Bodega BD60 works exactly as advertised. It reliably achieves both fridge and freezer temperatures and retains cool air better than any other portable fridge I’ve tested.
The latches on the Bodega BD60 are a great feature for travel. They’re very secure, which is essential for keeping the fridge shut during transport. However, the downside is that they take a few seconds to undo, which can be a minor inconvenience when you need to access the fridge quickly.
My main concern is actually with the lid. When you close it and latch it shut, it doesn’t feel like it’s fully sealing. There’s no noticeable resistance, which makes it seem like the lid isn’t sinking down tightly against the seal.
That said, this issue could be an easy fix by replacing the sealant strip on the lid. For now, I haven’t felt the need to do that since it’s still keeping the cold air in effectively.
Aside from this, I have no complaints about the Bodega BD60. It performs well, feels solidly built, and is budget-friendly, making it an excellent choice for anyone in need of a 12 volt fridge.
Because of the large single compartment the Bodega fridge is easy to load with fridge or freezer foods.
Buy This if You
- Need a large single compartment fridge that can be powered by multiple source like 12 volt or 120 volt.

Don’t Buy This if You
- Want a portable fridge you can move when full. The Bodega BD60 has no wheels and gets very heavy when full of food.
- Don’t have a lot of space in your car, van or camper.
- Want a 12 volt fridge that opens quickly.
- Want to have a fridge and freezer at the same time. If that’s the case I recommend the BD80 I linked to above.
- Want inner basket organization. There is only one small wire basket included.
Energy Saving Tips
To get the most out of your Bodega BD60 while keeping energy usage low, follow these simple tips:
- Pre-Chill the Fridge – Before heading out, plug the BD60 into an AC outlet and let it cool down to your desired temperature. This reduces the workload on the compressor when you switch to a 12-volt power source.
- Cool Food and Drinks Before Loading – Placing pre-chilled or frozen items inside the fridge significantly reduces the amount of energy required to reach and maintain the set temperature. Avoid adding warm items if possible.
- Keep It Full – A full fridge retains cold air better than an empty one. If you don’t have enough food or drinks to fill it, consider adding reusable ice packs or other items to take up space.
- Minimize Lid Openings – Each time you open the lid, warm air enters the fridge, forcing the compressor to work harder. Plan ahead to reduce the number of times you need to access the fridge.
- Use Eco Mode – When maximum cooling isn’t necessary, switch the fridge to Eco Mode via the control panel or the CARFRIDGEFREEZER app. This setting reduces power consumption and prolongs battery life.
- Position It in the Shade – Avoid placing the fridge in direct sunlight or near heat sources. The cooler the surrounding environment, the less energy it will consume to maintain temperature.
- Check and Maintain the Seal – Ensure the lid’s seal is in good condition to prevent cold air from escaping. If the seal feels loose or inefficient, consider replacing the stripping for better insulation.
- Pair with a Portable Power Station and Solar Panels – For off-grid adventures, use a portable power station and solar panels to keep the BD60 powered efficiently. This setup is perfect for extended trips without access to AC power.
- Monitor via the App – Use the CARFRIDGEFREEZER app to monitor temperature settings and battery levels. Adjusting the temperature slightly based on the contents can save power without compromising food safety.
By following these tips, you can maximize the efficiency of your Bodega BD60, whether you’re on a road trip, camping, or using it during an emergency.
